Free Webinar-CE Opioid Pain Management in Serious Illness: Assessing the Educational Needs of Patients and Families Across the Lifespan.

The Palliative Nursing Summit Pain Management Work Group and HPNA are presenting a free webinar on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. EST, titled Opioid Pain Management in Serious Illness: Assessing the Educational Needs of Patients and Families Across the Lifespan. Registration is open to all nurses, and HPNA membership is not required to attend the webinar. This course is offered to all interested participants as a continuing education service with no course attendance fee. 

Participants will learn about potential patient and family opioid fears and perceived myths that may pose as barriers toward achieving adequate pain management, identify effective communication techniques used to elicit baseline knowledge of patient's and family's concerns regarding opioid pain management in serious illness, and acquire new interview skills to improve assessments vital to providing thorough pain management education to optimize goals of care. 

Faculty presenters include Vanessa Battista, MS, RN CPNC-PC, a pediatric nurse practitioner on the Pediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a member of the ELNEC pediatric faculty; Amy Hasakamp, MSN, PCNS-BC, CPON, CHPPN, a pediatric clinical nurse specialist for the PACT at Indiana University Health Hospital with nearly 20 years of experience caring for children with cancer; and Ellyn Schreiner, MPH, RN-BC, CHPN, a former president for the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) with over 15 years of hospice experience and who currently is the site educator for Crossroads Hospice in Dayton, Ohio.  

The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation (ANCC) under provider number P0284. Successful course completion earns the RN participant 1.0 continuing nursing education (CNE) award (60 minutes/contact hour) and 1.0 Category 1 Designated Pharmacotherapeutic Credit Hours specific to national ANCC and AANP recertification of the NP/CNS, which includes current clinical application of pharmacology across the life span including drug-specific information, safe prescribing practices and information, safe medication administration, prescribing methodologies, new regulations, and/or similar content. This program activity is presented free from commercial bias and offered for educational purposes only with the absence of conflicts of interest from planners, presenters, and content developers.
